PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. – The United States is being invaded by millions of unwanted visitors every year, and as this infestation grows, many companies are taking new steps to hunt down and eradicate the vermin, before they strike.
“The epidemic of bedbugs is growing 100 percent each year. You get overseas travelers bringing them over, they’re sleeping in five star hotels,” said David Trietiak, President and CEO of K-9 P.I., a new company specializing in sniffing out bedbugs.
It can take hours of frustrating , backbreaking and mess making labor to detect these pests.
“They’re going to have to dismantle everything, your bed, your furniture, to find anything, whether it be a bedbug or an egg,” said Trietiak.
But for Trietiak, speed is his company’s hallmark. “We pretty much run through the whole place within 5 or 10 minutes.”
Their phenomenal speed comes from their star employee, a one year old beagle, named Angel.
“She’s the only NESDCA certified dog in South Florida,” said Trietiak. Meaning, she’s trained to locate the bugs wherever they may be hiding, and no job is too small.
Angel can detect as little as one egg in an entire house. Experts say bed bugs are the toughest of all pests to eradicate, and with their numbers on the rise, it could be tough to “sleep tight”, once “the bed bugs bite,” since you probably won’t even know it’s happening.
“They actually inject you with not only an anticoagulant, but an anasthetic. So you won’t wake up when they’re biting you,” said Trietiak. Just like the bugs that they hunt, “K-9 P.I.” works undercover. They come in an unmarked vehicle, so neighbors never even know there’s a problem.
